Sumatras Last Tigers

The documentary “Sumatras Last Tigers” is about an Indonesian tycoon named Tommy Winata who has created a nature reserve in Sumatra to help increase the population of the critically endangered Sumatran tiger.

The population of tigers has been declining due to habitat destruction and poaching by poachers, who kill them for profit.

The first step in Winata’s conservation project was to remove humans from the area, as they were the biggest threat to the tigers. He relocated the villagers and won them over by building a school and clinic. If the tiger population does increase, the villagers living near the reserve could face a deadly risk.

The tigers are being rescued from all over Southeast Asia and brought to the reserve where they are rehabilitated and then released back into the wild. The most controversial aspect of Winata’s plan is releasing conflict tigers, who have attacked humans, back into the wild.

The tiger release program is being overseen by Dr. Bongot and results so far have been promising, with the tigers staying away from the villages. One conflict tiger, Panti, was released and mated, producing cubs. The documentary highlights the challenges and risks involved in the project to save the Sumatran tiger.

Despite the controversy surrounding Tommy’s plan, the success of the project in increasing the tiger population in the reserve has given hope for the survival of the Sumatran tiger. However, the villagers living near the reserve are still at risk, and the release of conflict tigers remains a contentious issue.

The documentary highlights the urgent need to protect endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger from habitat destruction and poaching and showcases the efforts of conservationists like Tommy Winata to preserve these animals for future generations.
