Hunt for U-576 submarine continues as new evidence surfaces
The documentary describes an expedition to locate a sunken German submarine, the U-576, which sank off the coast of North Carolina during World War II.
The U-576 was one of many German submarines that patrolled the waters off the East Coast of the United States during the early years of the war, with the goal of disrupting the flow of supplies to Great Britain.
The expedition team, aboard the research vessel Baseline Explorer, deploys two submersibles to explore the site where the U-576 sank. They descend 700 feet into the deep waters, navigating through tricky currents and near-complete darkness to reach the target.
The dive is dangerous, but the archaeologists and sub-pilot are eager to uncover a glimpse into a pivotal moment of the Second World War.
During the early months of 1942, German submarines sank numerous ships along the U.S. eastern seaboard, including a convoy of merchant ships that were stalked by the U-576.
The U-boat fired a full bow salvo of torpedoes, striking four ships and causing severe damage to three of them. The U-576 then unexpectedly surfaced in the middle of the convoy, likely due to damage to its ballast system.
This put the U-boat in a vulnerable position and allowed the convoy escorts to fire back, ultimately sinking the U-576 with depth charges.
The discovery of the U-576 is a significant achievement for underwater archaeologists, as it provides valuable insights into the naval history of World War II.
The expedition team hopes to learn more about the U-576 and the men who served on board, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the tactics and strategies employed by German U-boats during the early years of the war.
The expedition is also part of a larger effort to document and preserve historical shipwrecks and other underwater sites around the world.
